Obituary from The Des Moines Register newspaper, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, USA on 4-1-2007:

Paul Fredrick Borchert, 81, passed away Friday, March 30 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Altoona. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, at Hamilton's Altoona Funeral Home. Burial will take place at St Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery in Lacona.

Paul was born September 5, 1925 in Lacona to Florence and Fred Borchert.

He served in the US Army during World War II. On March 25, 1951 he married Thelma Vander Ecken in Lacona. Paul worked at GTE in Grinnell from 1953 to 1989 and for INS from 1990 to 1997. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church. Paul enjoyed playing cards and golfing. He played league softball until he was 65 years of age. He also enjoyed hiking. Paul loved spending time with his family.

Paul is survived by his children, Ronald (Barb), Jeffrey (Marti), Sharon (Randy) Smalley, Kevin (Karen) , Bryan (Julie); his brothers and sisters, Leland, Marvin, Gloria, Grace, Edgar, Ilene, Larry and Joan; his ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma; his siblings, Myrtle, Leora, Audrey, Glen and Henry and his granddaughter, Christina Smalley.
