Obituary from The Des Moines Register newspaper, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa, USA on 6-26-2012:

Bernard Albert "Barney" Heinen, 89, passed from this life on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Madrid, of which he was a member. Burial will take place at Mt. Hope Cemetery south of Madrid.

Barney was born on November 8, 1922 near Milo, IA, to Andrew J. and Emma (Frueh) Heinen. He married Neomi C. Foertsch on November 22, 1944 in Wesley, IA, and to this union, five children were born. Neomi preceded him into eternal life on February 20, 2003. Barney later married Gladys (Burke) Erickson on June 1, 2006 in Madrid, IA. In 1988, He retired from Ziegler Caterpillar (formerly known as Gibbs-Cook Equipment Co.) as a mechanic. Prior to that, Barney was a farmer in north central Iowa until 1971, and then became owner and operator of a Grocery Store in Ellsworth, Iowa until a fire destroyed the business in late 1972. Barney enjoyed his family, spending time with his grandchildren, gardening, fishing, a good debate, and especially playing cards. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Gladys Heinen of Madrid; four sons, Dennis (Sharon) Heinen of Huxley, IA, Gary (Connie) Heinen of Garner, IA, Bernie (Loretta) Heinen of Slater, IA and Tim (Cheryl) Heinen of Ankeny; one sister, Bernadine Tosseth of Mandan, ND; two brothers-in-law, Ed (Agnes) Foertsch and John Foertsch; one sister-in-law, Irene (Lyle) Kuyper all of Algona, IA; ten grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his first wife, Neomi; Barney was preceded into eternal life by his daughter at infancy, Mary Heinen; parents; four brothers; four sisters, one of which died at infancy; two brothers-in-law; seven sisters-in-law; and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be held after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, at the church, where the family will be present from 4 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service will begin at 7 p.m.

The family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made in Bernard Heinen's name to either St. Malachy's Catholic Church or Mercy Hospice of Johnston.
