“Services held for longtime New Virginia Resident”

“Funeral services for Leo E. Spencer, 91, of 1610 West Third Ave. were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Overton Funeral Home. Intermant was in the Liberty Center Cemetery.

Mr. Spencer died late Wednesday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center where he had been a patient for five days.

Born near Liberty Center, he had lived in and near New Virginia from 1933 to 1977 before moving to Indianola. He was a farmer and livestock buyer and owned the hardware store in New Virginia for 12 years before retiring.

Surviving him is his wife Hazel. They had celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in 1982. Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Mildred Swinford of Keokuk; three sons, Russell of Woodburn, Herbert of Hot Springs, Ark., and Harold of Prescott, Ariz., 17 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.”
