Advocate Tribune, March 17, 1910
James H. Lee was born in Rockingham, West Virginia May 3, 1831 and died at his home in Indianaola, Iowa March 15, 1910, being seventy eight years nine months and twelve days old.
At about the age of twenty three Mr. Lee left West Virginia and located on a farm in McClain county, Ill, ad it was while he lived there that he married Hannah Smith, May 2, 1858. He enlisted in the war of 1861 with the 94th regiment and went to the front to aid as best he could, to defend the country that he loved so well, and after being out in the service about four months, he received a wound that made him disabled for further usefulness in the conflict that was then going on, and hence was discharged and sent home. He resided on the farm in Illinois until the year 1890 when they moved to Indianaola, Ia. and resided in this city ever since.
To their union there were born nine children, two dying in infancy, a boy and a girl; four boys, William S., George D., Frank, and Harve, and three girls, Elizabeth Carpenter of Des Moines, Susan Lippincott, Indianola, and Emma Jane Short, of Ackworth, with their grand good mother, and sixteen grandchildren and one great grand child still survives the faithful husband and father.
Brother Lee joined the Christian church in Illinois in 187 and during all of the years of his suffering lived a true consistent Christian and patiently waited for the call of the Master who sayeth, "Come unto me and I will give you rest." and thus this father and dear husband fell asleep in Jesus and there, with the loved ones gone before, will watch and wait for the coming of the wife and children and friends he loved so well.
