Services for Harold Dean Amos who passed away March 31, 2010, at the age of 83, at Iowa Methodist Powell after a courageous two-year battle with cancer, will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 6 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Burial with military rites will follow in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Harold was born on February 22, 1927, to Howard and Mildred (Thompson) Amos and grew up south of Indianola, attending Indianola Community Schools and graduated in 1945. Harold married Mildred Louise Turner, August 7, 1948.

Drafted in 1954, he served in the Korean War, Headquarters Co., 44th Engineers, as Heavy Equipment Operator then Carpentry.

He moved to his current home West of Indianola in 1949 and has farmed all of his adult life, row crop, hay and livestock. He Dairy operation for 48 years, hay business for past ten years and many have seen Harold in parades with pony hitches, Model A car or pickup.

Harold was pictured in the Montgomery Gentry Video "Daddy Won't Sell the Farm", was Outstanding Young Farmer in1961 both Polk and Warren Counties, 1994 Iowa State Fair Parade 1st Place Best Non-Commercial Animal with Dr. Buggy and Pony Hitch, 1992 Balloon Parade 1st Place Open, Farmer of the Year 2002 National Balloon Classic, Grand Champion Female, Warren Co. Fair ten years in a row, and showed Holstein cattle at district shows, county fairs, the Cattle Congress in Waterloo, and the Iowa State Fair.

He enjoyed farming, family (especially the grandchildren), his ponies and running farm machinery. He liked competition in plowing matches, tractor pulling, parades, and showing Holstein cattle.

He was a member of Farm Bureau, Warren Co. Historical Society, and Center Chapel United Methodist Church.

Preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Survivors include his loving wife of over 61 years, Mildred "Millie" Amos; daughters, Caroline (Brad) Johnson and Linda L. (Kevin) Wickett; grandchildren, Shelby Johnson, Dalton Johnson, Bryan Wickett and Amy Wickett, all of Indianola; one brother, Roland (Joanne) Amos of Martensdale; brothers-in-law, Donald (Velma) Turner of Lacona and Orville (Joyce) Turner of Osceola; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.

Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m., Monday, April 5 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola where family will be present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to Center Chapel United Methodist Church in his name.Online condolences may be sent at www.overtonfunerals.com
