JUDGE MAURICE HERRICK, Indianola

Judge Maurice Connor Herrick, 96, died May 25, 2009, at the Village Health Center in Indianola.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 29, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Indianola. Visitation will be from 3–7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola where the family will be present from 6–7:30 p.m. A Vigil service will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will follow at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to A.L.S. Research or St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Maurice Herrick was born Sept. 11, 1912, in Gilmore City to Dr. Rupert C. and Ingeborg Herrick. He attended the University of Iowa where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1935 and a Juris Doctor degree in 1937 with high distinction. His marriage to Pamela F. Diemer took place in 1934 and to this union four children were born — Peter, Allan, Pamela and Sarah. Following Pamela’s death in 1969, he later married Marguerite M. Morrissey of Winterset. Maurice was associated with Herrick and Langdon and the Iowa State Insurance Commission in Des Moines. He then served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. Upon his return, he was in private practice in Indianola and also served as the Warren County attorney and city attorney for Indianola until his appointment on Jan. 1, 1964, to the district court bench, where he served until Jan. 1, 1986. After resigning from the district court, he continued to serve as a senior judge in District 5. He was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Indianola, Iowa State and American Bar Association, American Legion, and Order of Coif (an honorary legal fraternity).

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pamela; one son, Peter; and three brothers, Thomas, Rupert and Donald Herrick.

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite; three children, Allan Herrick of Indianola, Pam Hines of Des Moines, and Sarah Keegan of Manning; and 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
