WARD, WILLIAM, farmer, Allen Townhip, Sec. 5; P. O. Avon; was born in Mason county, West Virginia, April 16, 1816; when ten years of age, he went to Springfield, Illinois, with his brother; his father died when he was six years of age, and his mother, when he was but two years old; he remained in Springfield till nineteen years of age, then went to Dubuque and worked for two years, then went eighteen miles southwest of that place, and took a claim and went to farming; where he lived till 1855; he married in Jackson county, this State, June 3, 1840, to Miss Mary A. Snodgrass, of Ohio; they have one son and four daughters: Wm., Sarah E., Margaret, Ellen and Laura, lost one son in the late rebeilion, he belonged to the Thirty-ninth Iowa, and was shot through the leg at Kingston, Georgia; he owns 504 acres of land.
