MARIETTA, JOHN C., physician and surgeon, Palmyra Township, P. O. Palmyra; born in Summerset county, Pennsylvania, in the year 1845, and moved, with his parents, to Fayette county in the year 1848, and from there to this State in 1857, and to Warren county in 1864; he enlisted as a private in Co. A, 48th regiment, Iowa Volunteers, June 11, 1864, and was discharged October, 1864; his early education was received at Indianola; in 1867 he went to Illinois, where he studied medicine, and in 1871 he went to Minnesota, and returned to Iowa the same year, and engaged in the drug business at Grinnell, Powashiek county; he attended the college of physicians and surgeons, at Keokuk, in 1873, and graduated an M. d. in 1876; he located in Palmyra in 1874, and was married to Miss Hattie M. Lutz, of Palmyra, in 1875; she was born in Indiana, and came to Iowa at an early age.
