CARRUTHERS, WILLIAM B., Indianola, of the firm of Hall & Carruthers, attorneys, abstractors, real estate agents and money loaners; was born in Scotland in 1823; came to the United States in 1835, and settled in North Carolina, and in 1837 removed to Ohio; he was raised a farmer and for six years was engaged in teaching; in 1854 he removed to Washington county, Iowa, and engaged in mercantile pursuits; in 1866 he removed to Knoxville, Marion county, and engaged in the lumber business; while living here he was elected mayor of the city; he came to this county in 1874; he married Miss Susan J. Brownlee in 1845; she was born in Rockbridge county, Virginia; their family consists of three children: Maggie J., now Mrs. Patterson, Robert E., now a resident of Shelby county, Iowa, and John Howard, a graduate of the State University.
