WILLIAM CARL SCHRIER
William Carl Schrier, son of David and Rosina Schrier, was born in Germany Dec. 7, 1876. Dec. 21, 1904, he married Verda Shaw, daughter of James G. and Minerva Shaw. Mrs. Schrier was born two miles east of Indianola Nov. 2, 1876. Mr. and Mrs. Schrier have three children: Frances Olive, now Mrs. D. C. Brodie of California, born July 22, 1906; Wilma Alice, now Mrs. R. L. Davis of Des Moines, born Oct. 29, 1908; and William Carl Jr. of Indianola, born July 25, 1910.
At the age of 21 years W. C. Schrier enlisted in Company A, 51st infantry and spent almost two years in the service during the war with Spain in 1898-99. As a young man he learned the trade of bricklaying from such men as Silas Fortney, George Porter and Mont Goodman.
He continued in this work in Indianola for 50 years. Mr. Schrier was chairman of the Soldiers Relief commission of Warren County for a number of years, He is a 50- year member of the Indianola Lodge No. 70, I.O.O.F., and a member of Warren Lodge No. 53, A. F. & A. M. He has also been a member of the Indianola fire department for 50 years, and has held the office of chief for 21 years. Mrs. Schrier was a rural schoolteacher in Warren County for a number of years before her marriage. Indianola has been the Schrier home during all their married life. Politically the Schriers are Republican, and their religious affiliation is with the United Presbyterian Church of Indianola.
