MICHAEL CASH (1820 - ?)
Pioneer Sketches – by Leonard S. Spencer [The Advocate Tribune, Indianola, Iowa, Thursday, Jan 22, 1885, p.2, col.3]
Perhaps there is no country upon the globe that has had more ups and downs then Ireland; yet, she has raised many smart and intelligent men. Some of the greatest statesmen that the world has ever produced were Irishmen; some of the greatest pulpit orators were of Irish decent; yet, very many of her people have been badly governed. The early history of this island is involved in great obscurity, and it is impossible to distinguish fact from fiction in the tales of its early historians. But we are not writing the history of Ireland, only the biography of some of her sons and daughters. If we look on the map of this island, about the middle of the island, both ways, we will find Kings county, east from Galway Bay, and nearly west from the city of Dublin, the metropolis of the island.
In this county Michael Cash was born, in the town of Cloghan, April 6th, 1820. Like most other boys, he was raised upon a farm, receiving such advantages for schooling as the country and the times in which he was raised afforded. Sixty years since, the times in Ireland were of what they are now, and the subject of our sketch had to conform to the times in which he lived. At the age of 27 he was seized with a violent emigration fever for the “new world.” No physician could give him the healing balm that would restore him to his native health; the only cure was to emigrate, and emigrate he did, leaving Dublin on board of a sailing vessel. After an ocean tossed voyage he landed in New York, and from there went to Philadelphia. Here he lived for some time doing business for himself. During his stay here he married Miss Ellen McCormick, also a native of Ireland. They were married April 8th, 1849. Mrs. Cash was born in Kildare County in 1831. She emigrated to this country in the year 1846, one year previous to Mr. C. How their acquaintance was formed we are unable to say.
After their marriage, some two years, this couple concluded they could better themselves by moving to some other locality. Hatterfield, N.J. was their next place of abode; here they remained some two years, then went to Glouchester County, N.J. He remained there until 1856, when the western fever struck him again and he came to Warren County, Iowa, and settled upon the farm that he now lives upon.
The writer of this article became acquainted with him immediately after his arrival, and was his nearest neighbor for several years; better neighbors we do not wish to live by then Mr. and Mrs. Cash. During the spring of 1857 there came one of these “Jimmie Caines.” They happened to be in its road and their house was blown down and Mrs. Cash received a severe blow by the falling roof upon her head; from the effects of this she has never recovered. By spells she is confined to her bed, caused by his hurt.
For twenty-eight years the writer has been a close neighbor, has done a great deal of business with him and has never found the least cause for complaint; although we differ in opinion as to religious belief and politically. In religious belief they are Catholics, politically he is a Democrat, which he has a right to be; for all this we have been on the most friendly terms. They have a family of four children, two boys and three girls, all married but the youngest boy. He teaches school the greater part of the time, as he is very much crippled. They, like all the rest, will soon pass, after enduring the storms of pioneer life.
