[In Sep 1885, residents in Warren County were not happy with the Republican controlled county officials and formed a People’s County Convention to nominate county officials on a People’s County ticket. The following “biographical” information was written for those candidates]
Samuel S. Hewitt, the nominee for Sheriff, is now serving his first term as such officer, having been elected two years ago by a handsome majority, and running far ahead of his ticket. In Belmont township, which was then his home, he ran eighty ahead of his ticket – a strong contrast with the home record of his opponent, W. C. Montgomery. He had made an excellent officer and is a stronger candidate than he was two years ago, because he is better known. He is a thorough Warren county man, having been reared her from early boyhood.
[According to New Mexico Deaths 1889-1945 on FamilySearch.com, Samuel Scott Hewitt died January 18, 1934 in Artesia, Eddy County, New Mexico]
