Bio: JOHN HOMMER, MAIL MAN; Wick, IA
The following article was cut out of some newspaper and sent to my mother ETHEL CLARA HOMMER DAY. This is an abstract:
The writer is in receipt of a post card photo, which I believe has a record attached to it. It pictures our general R. L. C., J. H. Hommer with his outfit, Dave and Katie and the U. S. Mail wagon. This is the record: Dave and Katie have been on the Wick R. R. No. 1, almost 6 years and have traveled apprloximately 40,000 miles. You get that?
Mr. Hommer however has driven 46,200 miles, and delivered approximately 4,500,000 pieces of mail. We are inclined to the belief that six years on the route speaks as well for the driver as Katie and Dave. Mr. Hommer evidently has the welfare of the little sorrels at heart, and it is to be hoped that patrons on the route will take an interest in the good roads proposition, (with capitals G and R) and help lighten the burden of these faithful horses which have served us so well, by the use of the drag in proper season. We are personally acquainted with a carrier who was requested to lay off until his horses recuperated. But Dave and Katie seem good for many days of service yet.
Here's to the Carrier
Faithful and brave
Here's to the sorrels
Katie and Dave,
Here's to the man
Not afraid of hard knocks
But none to the man
Who leaves snow by his box. (With apologies to Walt Mason or
any other old poet.)
