From the Daily Iowa State Press (Iowa City, Iowa) dated Thursday, February 25, 1904.
Mrs. Belle Lewis, thanks largely to the testimony of Dr. L.W. Dean of Iowa City, was acquited of the charge of murdering her husband. The defendant was dismissed this morning a few minutes after Dr. Dean testified as an expert witness summoned by the defense (he had reported on the same subject to the state). The Iowa City surgeon proved that the husband, whose head had been exhumed, might have died from the effects of the abscess in his ear, just as the defense alleged. The poison found in the dead man's stomach, it was concomitantly shown, might have been one of the many doses he was prone to take throughout many years. The wife was at once freed after Dr. Dean's testimony was heard.
