Dear Sue,
Regarding Newton T. Mason: I can't read the job either, but the job location is 'bridge' and the birth state was 'New York' with parents birth 'Eng English'

Armed with that and the birth date you gave, here is a likely entry from the 1880 census. I know the name for the 11 year old son is not a precise match, but since the online 1880 is a transcript, rather than actual images, it may be a 'T' on the original.

In the 1870 census, Thomas and Caroline Mason reside in the same location, and among their children, one year old Thomas N Mason is their youngest child.

I could not find him in 1900. I checked only Monroe County, NY and Wapello, Iowa. He may have been 'in transit'
