Dear Sue,
Regarding Newton T. Mason: I can't read the job either, but the job location is 'bridge' and the birth state was 'New York' with parents birth 'Eng English'Armed with that and the birth date you gave, here is a likely entry from the 1880 census. I know the name for the 11 year old son is not a precise match, but since the online 1880 is a transcript, rather than actual images, it may be a 'T' on the original.

I could not find him in 1900. I checked only Monroe County, NY and Wapello, Iowa. He may have been 'in transit'
Good Luck,
Ellan
