Granddaughter Of City’s First Postmaster Dies
Mrs. Mollie Evans Cummings, 80, life-long resident of Ottumwa died at 10:45 a.m. today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E.L. Kirkhart, 162 North Ward street. She was the granddaughter of Paul C. Jeffries, first postmaster in Ottumwa. The daughter of Benjamin W. and Martha Jeffries, she was born here July 16, 1863. She was married here on October 31, 1883, to W.W. Cummings, who preceded her death June 30, 1940. Her grandfather, besides being this city’s first postmaster, was one of the first court judges and was a member of the board that laid out the plan for Ottumwa’s expansions. Mrs. Cummings was one of the first members of the Willard Street Methodist church. Besides Mrs. Kirkhart, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Faye C. Minteer, Alhambra, California and Mrs. Ann C. McKee, St. Louis, Missouri; seven grandchildren. Mrs. Vincent F. Kelley, Ottumwa, Ensign W. Bruce Minteer, San Pedro, California, Private First-Class John H. Minteer, San Diego, California, Miss Barbara, Minteer, Alhambra, California, and Logan, Jack and Janet McKee, all of St. Louis, and a sister, Mrs. Anna J. Crips, Ottumwa. She was preceded in death by a son, a daughter and three sisters. Private funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Johnson’s funeral chapel for Mrs. W.W. Cummings. She died Friday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E.L. Kirkhart, 162 North Ward street. The Rev. C.R. Reed of the Willard Street Methodist church will be in charge and burial will be in Shaul cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel until the hour of the services when the casket will be closed.
