Duncan Chickering Dies Here Suddenly
Duncan H. Chickering, 66, of 612 Chester avenue, died suddenly at his home Thursday at 9 p.m. He was the son of Charles and Harriett Chickering and was born near Red Oak February 23, 1877. Mr. Chickering moved to Floris in 1912 where he was a farmer until coming to Ottumwa 23 years ago. He had been a rural mail carrier for 20 years, retiring in March of 1941. He was a veteran of the Spanish American war, serving in Co. K. second Oregon regiment, volunteer infantry and was a member of the Joseph Hayes camp, Spanish American War Veteran; of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and of the Willard Street Methodist church. He is survived by his wife, Rozilla; two daughters, Mrs. Mabel Feely of Corpus Christi, Texas and Mrs. Ruth Everland of New Sharon; four sons Lewis Chickering of Bloomfield, Charles of Floris, Grand of Ottumwa and Technical Sergeant John F. Chickering of the Army Air Corps stationed at Portland, Oregon. He also is survived by 13 grandchildren, two brothers, George Chickering of Webb, Iowa and Bert of Winterset, and by one sister. Mrs. Balance Fitzpatrick of Burlington. Funeral services will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Willard Street Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. C.R. Reed with burial in the Memorial Lawn cemetery. The casket will be taken form the Johnson funeral chapel to the church at noon Sunday. Funeral services for Duncan H. Chickering a retired mail carrier who died suddenly Thursday morning at his home here, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday from the Willard Street Methodist church. The Rev. C.R. Reed will be in charge of the services and burial will be in Memorial Lawn cemetery. The casket will be taken from the Johnson chapel to the church at noon Sunday. Active pallbearers will be selected from the Ottumwa rural mail carriers and honorary pallbearers are fellow veterans of the Spanish American war. There will be a military service at the grave.
