Alverson, Civil War Vet, Dies In Batavia

Joseph Henry Alverson, 99, last Civil War veteran residing in Jefferson county, died at 6 a.m. today at his home 4 ½ miles northeast of Batavia after four days of illness. He was a member of the Abington Christian church, member at large of the Grand Army of the Republic and honorary member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Alverson was born in Gerard county, Kentucky near Lancaster September 16, 1844, the son of Benjamine and Celista Alverson, and came to Wapello county near Batavia, when he was 4 years old. His entire life except the time of his military service was spent near Batavia. He was preceded in death by his wife and three children. He leaves on daughter, Mrs. H.W. Caverdale of Bagley, a son, Roy at home, a grandson., J. Max Alverson of Camp Berkley, Texas, and a brother, James B. Alverson of Batavia. The body was taken to the Community funeral parlors at Ottumwa.
