Max J. Maust, 20 Victim Of Crackup, On Routine Night Flight
An aviation cadet, Max Jerome Maust, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Myron Andrew Maust, 300 Walnut street, Sewickley, Pennsylvania, was killed early this morning when a Navy training plane in which he was flying crashed two miles north of the U.S. Naval station here, where he had been on duty. Cadet Maust had 22 ½ hours of solo flight and 32 ½ dual hour previous to reporting at the Ottumwa station on May 13. He was on the final hours of his primary flight training course at the Ottumwa station. The accident happened while Maust was on a routine night flight, it was announced in the official information release by Captain Branford E. Grow, U.S.N. commanding officer of the Ottumwa station. Maust was the first cadet fatality since the station began operations in mid-March. Maust attended Juniata college at Huntingdon, Pennsylvania taking a premedical course. He won letters in football and basketball. He enlisted in the Navy, July 23, 1942. The body is at the Reece funeral home from where it will proceed to Sewickley with Naval escort, as requested by the next of kin.
