Matthew S. Bonar Dies At Age Of 85

Matthew S. Bonar, 85, died suddenly at 3 a.m. Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A.W. Bruce, 424 West Fourth street. Mr. Bonar was the son of Matthew William and Elizabeth Bonar and was born in Ohio, March 11, 1857. He was a resident of Van Buren county for 50 years of Bloomfield for 10 years, and had lived in Ottumwa since 1928, making his home with his daughter. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church. Mr. Bonar is survived by one daughter, five grandchildren, Ensign Robert B. Bruce, U.S.N.R., Matthew L. Bruce, Detroit, Elizabeth F. Bruce, Albert W. Bruce and Mary E. Bruce all of Ottumwa and by one sister, Mrs. Martha Burchett of Milton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lavena Frances Bonar on January 15, 1926.
Funeral services for Matthew Scott Bonar, who died suddenly at 3 a.m. Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A.W. Bruce, 424 West Fourth street, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Johnson's funeral chapel conducted by the Rev. Paul Graebel, D.D. of the First Presbyterian church. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery at Bloomfield. The casket was to be taken to the Bruce home this afternoon and returned to the chapel Friday morning. It will be closed at the beginning of the service. Honorary pallbearers will be H.W. Gibbs, Paul Clausing, James Van Antwep, Oscar Stoltz, F.W. Douma and E.K. Becman; active pallbearers, S.S. Barker, s.L. Sullivan, S.S. Melchert, W.T. Dunlap, Verlin Francis and Elmer Pohlson.
