Baby, 5 Months Old, Dies Of Suffocation
Inhalator Fails To Revive Rupe Infant
Rose Mary Rupe five-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Rupe, 1211 Orchard street, died of suffocation in her bed at approximately 4 a.m. today. The mother discovered the child's plight shortly after 6 o'clock. She called the fire department inhalator squad. Firemen used the inhalator, but were unable to revive the baby. She was pronounced dead by Dr. G.C. Moore. He told firemen that he would give the cause of death as suffocation. The parents said they had not heard the child in the early morning hours.
Surviving are the parents; three brothers, John, Raymond and Roy Jr. and a sister, Shirley, all at home, the grandparents, Mrs. and Mrs. J.E. Slater of Ottumwa and Mr. and Mrs. John Rupe of Ottumwa. Her great-grandmother Mrs. Martha Redfern of Ottumwa also survives. Private funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Slater at 1602 1/2 East Main Street. The Rev. A.D. McClure will be in charge. Burial will be in the Shaul cemetery. The casket will be taken from the Johnson funeral chapel to the Slater residence at 5 p.m. today.
