Oldest Resident In Richland Twp. Dies
Mrs. C.F. Spurgeon Was Born In 1847
Mrs. Charles F. Spurgeon, 94, oldest Richland township resident, died Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Roy Harter 10 miles north of Ottumwa. Mrs. Arminda Jane Spurgeon was born near Sun Prairie Wisconsin, February 28, 1847, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elhanan King. She lived there until 1859 when the family moved to Benton county, Missouri. The family is reported to have been driven from Benton county by southerners in the Civil war shortly after the battle of Wilson creek in 1861. The Kings then moved to Richmond, where South Ottumwa now is located. Mrs. Spurgeon moved with her family to the Mt. Tabor neighborhood in Highland township a few years later, was married December 8, 1865 to C.F. Spurgeon. The couple moved to the Spurgeon homestead in Richland township near Kirkville, where Mrs. Spurgeon lived for 75 years. Surviving are three sons, Jesse Spurgeon, Des Moines city auditor, Julian C. of Mt. Pleasant and William W. at home; three great-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren, and a sister in Pascoe, Washington. She was preceded in death by her husband November 22, 1921 , and by sons, Frank and Greeley. Services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Community funeral service chapel, conducted by the Rev. Harold Lancaster D.D. Burial will be in Ottumwa cemetery.
