Posted on August 28, 2018 by ottumwa post in ObituariesOTTUMWA – Richard Foudree, 76, of Ottumwa died peacefully at home on Sunday, August 26, 2018.
He was born March 9, 1942 to Clarence A. and Olive E. Richardson Foudree in Ottumwa.
Ever the adventurous soul, after high school Richard hitchhiked throughout northern Europe. Upon returning to the States, he traveled to Miami, Florida where he crewed for Windjammer Cruises on the tall sailing ships. These sailing adventures took him to various ports of call throughout the Caribbean, West Indies and Windward Islands. He then traveled west to California where he crewed on a private charter sailboat moored in San Pedro. His sailing adventures took him to Mexico, Catalina and the Channel Islands. It was during his time in California in the 1960’s that he developed his leather skills. Richard returned to Ottumwa in 1971 where he opened Pathfinder Leather Goods. From 1971 through 2014 Richard crafted custom sandals, handbags, wallets, belts and other personal leather goods for hundreds of people. His craftsmanship and friendship were known and loved by all.
During his lifetime he also traveled to England, Scotland, Ireland, the Cook Islands and New Zealand. His greatest passion, outside of his leatherwork, was sailing (especially his catamarans).
He is survived by his wife, Ellen; his dog companion, Aero; his daughter, Wendy Christine Hoover and hundreds of friends whom he considered family.
In honor of Richard’s wishes, his body has been cremated and no services are planned.
A celebration gathering will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to Hospice serving Davis and Wapello Counties or the Animal Rescue League.
Reece Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
