Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” July 3, 1972:

Mrs. Hattie E. Long, 71, 526 S. Moore, died Sunday at 11:30 p.m. at the Ottumwa Hospital following a long illness.

She was born Nov. 6, 1900, in Ottumwa, the daughter of Henry and Julia Bennett Pilcher. She had been a resident of Ottumwa all her life. She was a member of the Willard Street United Methodist Church.

She married Ernest E. Long May 14, 1917, in Ottumwa. He preceded her in death Jan. 22, 1968. She was also preceded in one brother.

Survivors include three sons, George E. Long, Ernest Rex Long, and Donald David Long, all of Ottumwa; four daughters, Mrs. William R. Gharrett of Davenport, Mrs. Louise McCoy of Albia, Mrs. R. Wayne Jacks of Camanche, and Mrs. Gary R. Buffington of Winfield; 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The service will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Reece Funeral Home. The Rev. Larry LaVelle of Wesley United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Shaul Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
