Virginia Louise 'Gig' Small

Virginia Louise "Gig" Small, 93, of Farmington, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at home.

The body has been donated to the University of Iowa's anatomy department. Burial will be at a later date in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made in her memory to a charity of the donor's choice. Contributions may be mailed to Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home, PO Box 56, Donnellson 52625.

Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Farmington is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mrs. Small was born Aug. 23, 1920, in Packwood, the daughter of Carl and Bessie May Wilson Edmund. She married Parley D. Small Nov. 19, 1944, in Packwood.

She earned a bachelor's degree at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois, and a master's degree at University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls.

She taught school for 40 years in the Pekin and Ottumwa school districts.

She was a member of the Farmington United Methodist Church where she played the piano for more than 30 years.

She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

She enjoyed quilting, working crossword puzzles, reading and playing the piano.

Survivors include one son, James Small and spouse Mary of Croton; one daughter, Mary Hilyar and spouse Dusty of Long Beach, California; one sister, Mary Katherine Woolums of Des Moines; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Parley and two sisters, Helen Wiggins and Jo Sturgell.
