Philip Dean Shaver

Philip Dean Shaver, age 85, of Sigourney, died Thursday, July 10, 2014, at the Sigourney Care Center.

Philip was born April 10, 1929, in Sigourney, the fourth of five sons of Dr. Roy Ernest and Mary Eugenia (McCully) Shaver.

He was a member of the Sigourney High School class of 1949. He had worked for Glen Parkhill and then was drafted into the Army. He was stationed in Aberdeen, Maryland, and Manheim, Germany, from 1953 until 1954. He worked for Parkhill Trucking and Iowa Dairyland. Later he owned and operated Shaver Trenching & Excavation.

He married Madonna Williams on May 29, 1966, at the South Keokuk Church of the Brethren near Ollie. They were the parents of three children.

Phil spent many hours in his shop making things of wood and visiting at the coffee shops. He enjoyed being with his family and was an avid fan of the Cubs, Bears and Iowa Hawkeyes.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters: Jodi and husband Mickey Kerr of Fairfield and Kelly Shaver of Streamwood, Illinois; son: Dustin and wife Bobbi Shaver of Colorado Springs, Colorado; five grandchildren: Courtney and Hanna Kerr, Grace, Jack and Joseph Shaver of Denver, Colorado; two sisters-in-law: Lura Shaver of Coronodo, California and Kathleen Shaver of Ames; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: William McCully, Leroy Eugene and Charles Edward and sister-in-law: Evelyn Shaver.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 14, 2014, at the Sigourney United Methodist Church, with pastor Vince Homan officiating.

Burial with military rites will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2014, at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney.

A memorial fund has been established for the Sigourney Care Center or the Sigourney United Methodist Church.
