Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” August 9, 1900:

DROWNED IN RIVER

Arthur Postlewait Meets Death Near Cummings’ Ice House

WAS SWIMMING IN THE RIVER

While Enjoying the Sport in Company with Two Other Lads He Got In Over His Depth–Son of Martin Postlewait.

What may result in a fatal accident occurred near the Cummings’ ice house in South Ottumwa about 2 o’clock this afternoon. Arthur Postlewait, in company with two companions, was swimming in the Des Moines river, when he got into the water over his head. He was rescued in a few minutes. Dr. C.C. Powell was summoned and was still working on him at the time of going to press, and has some hopes of resuscitating him.

The lads who were swimming with Arthur Postlewait were Ed. Lowe, aged ten years, and Charles Harness, aged twelve years. The Harness boy was also under the water, but was rescued. The Lowe boy called for assistance and J.E. Aller, of 707 First street, responded and succeeded in rescuing the boys. Arthur Postlewait is the twelve-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Postlewait, who reside on Ferry street. While there are hopes for his recovery his condition is serious.

Later.–Arthur Postlewait died at 3:30.

(Note: Arthur is buried in Shaul Cemetery.)
