velyn was born on February 3, 1932 in Ottumwa, Iowa the daughter of Calvin M. and Rose A. (Peterson) Conger. She was a 1949 graduate of the Ottumwa High School. On October 14, 1950 she was married to Robert E. Cain, Jr. in Ottumwa where the couple made their home until 1962 at which time they moved to Fort Dodge, IA. While living in Ottumwa and Fort Dodge, Evelyn was employed in a music store. In 1970 the family moved to Independence, IA and she was employed as a waitress in the Pinicon Hotel for 7 years prior to her becoming employed as a residential aid technician with the Mental Health Hospital in Independence until her retirement in 1994. Evelyn was also a church organist for the Four Square Church and the Living Water Church in Independence.

She loved her children and grandchildren and enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening with them.

She is survived by six children; Adine Gray, Cedar Rapids, IA, Calvin Cain, Kansas City, IA, John Cain, Oelwein, IA, Margaret (Ron) Beck, Oelwein, IA, Ivola (Rick) Hibben, Evansdale, IA, and Bryan (Dawn) Cain, Independence, IA. Fifteen grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Robert E. Cain, Jr. in 1992, and John A. Althaus in 2002, and a daughter, Charlene E. Cain, and a sister; Doris Conger.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA with Rev. John Sheda officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 3 to 7 PM Thursday and from 8 AM to services Friday, at the funeral home.
