Robert S. Appleby was born in the state of Kentucky, March 10, 1833 and died December 17, 1910 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fanny Lane on Schuyler Street, where he had been tenderly cared for during the past three years. The remains were removed to Carrollton, Mo. Sunday night Dec. 18 and the funeral took place there yesterday. At the age of ten years with his widowed mother, Mr. Appleby moved to the state of Missouri. On March 4, 1855 he was married to Margaret Brock. He was the father of ten children, seven of whom survive. They are
James M. Appleby of Turner, Kans., John W. Appleby of Richmond, Okla., S. B. Appleby and Mrs. Anna Gale of Carrolton, Mo., Mrs. Mollie Church, Mrs. Emma Mynard and Mrs. Fanny Lane of South Ottumwa. Mr. Appleby had been entirely helpless for the past three years and his death was not unexpected. He was a lifelong member
of the Baptist church of Carrollton and a member of the Masonic fraternity. Mr. Appleby was also a veteran of the civil war, being a member of Company E, fourth provisional enrolled militia of the state of Missouri. He was a prisoner at the close of the war in his own home town in Missouri. Short funeral services were held at 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Lane, conducted by Rev. Jonathan Lee, pastor of the South Ottumwa Baptist church. An immense crowd of friends attended the services and attested to the high esteem in which the decedent was held. The remains were taken to Carrollton Sunday evening and the body was laid beside that of his wife in the cemetery there.
