PAUL L. GEORGE

Paul L. George, 74, of Ottumwa, the brother of Dwight George of Grinnell, died Friday, March 11, at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Wesley United Methodist church in Ottumwa, with the Rev. Richard Quinlan officiating. Burial was in Chariton Cemetery, with the Reece Funeral Home of Ottumwa in charge of arrangements.

The son of Dan and Vergie Dyer George, he was born April 14, 1919, in Bethlehem, Iowa. He was married to Itata Raffensperger March 4, 1941, in Baltimore, Md.

After graduating from Iowa Success School in Ottumwa, Mr. George began working for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore. He worked in several different states before returning to Ottumwa in 1956 to manage the local office. He retired in 1983.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Europe and the Pacific with the 86th Infantry Division. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the 86th Division Association. He was also a member and past president of the Ottumwa Noon Lions Club and received the club's Warren Coleman Award for service. He also was active in Masonic affairs.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Dr. Norman George of Grand Prairie, Alberta, Canada; one daughter, Leila George of Cedar Falls; a granddaughter; one sister, Ruth Johnson of Williamson; and a brother, Dwight of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Margaret George.
