Death comes to Earl H. Gardner
Earl H. Gardner, 48 of 132 East Lincoln Avenue died suddenly at the Ottumwa hospital at 4:10 a.m. today. He had been ill a short time, but was thought to be recovering and expected to return to work Monday. Mr. Gardner, for 23 years a machinist and welder and inspector at the Burlington roundhouse in Ottumwa, was prominent in the first Baptist church. At the time of his death he was chairman of the house committee and chairman of the Boy Scouts troop No. 3 committee of the church. He was formerly a trusted and deacon of the church. A veteran of the First World War, Mr. Gardner was a member of O.B. Nelson post No. 3, American Legion. He was secretary of the Zephyr lodge No. 1533, International Association of Machinists. He was born in Ainsworth, Iowa March 6, 1897 the son of William and Jessie Gardner. Surviving are his wife Nellie, a daughter Coleen, and a son Lyle, his parents, four brothers, Glen of Bouton, Iowa, F.G. Gardner of Brookfield Mo. Merritt Gardner of Ottumwa and Albert of Lincoln Nebraska. Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Lester Jay funeral home in charge of the Rev. R. Frank Hasty, pastor of the First Baptist church. Burial will be in the Ottumwa cemetery with military services at the graveside.
