ELDON — Lowell A. Pilcher, 87, of 15 Silvercrest Place in Iowa City, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after a short illness.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Military rites will be provided by the Coralville American Legion and other local military units. Burial with military honors is scheduled for this fall at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to The Lowell A. Pilcher Memorial Fund.

Lowell was born March 3, 1922, in Davis County, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Ethel (Brooks) Pilcher. He married Barbara B. Sauer on Sept. 5, 1953, in Weinheim, Germany. A true and proud military man, Lowell enlisted in the United States Army during his senior year of high school to serve in World War II. He then continued to serve in the military for nearly 22 years, retiring in 1966 as Sgt. 1st class. He also served during the Korean and Vietnam wars.He moved to the Iowa City area in 2004 from Vienna, Va., where he was a member of the American Legion .

His family includes two brothers, Kenneth (Virginia) Pilcher of Cedar Rapids and Donald (Carol) Pilcher of Washington, Iowa; two sisters, Lila (Jim) Earhart of Burlington, Iowa, and Joy Cox of Eldon, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Doris Pilcher of Des Moines and Bonnie Pilcher of LaCrescent, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.Lowell was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara; brothers and sisters and their spouses, Irene (Loren), Beryl, Darlene, Darrell (Shirley), Ivan, Wilbur (Phyllis) and Albert.
