OTTUMWA — Jack L. Smith, 68, of Miami, Fla., formerly of Ottumwa, died at 7 p.m. Aug. 11, 2008 at his home.He was born Sept. 15, 1939 in Ottumwa to Edward A. and Delores L. Woten Smith. He married Mary Carnes March 28, 1965 in San Diego, Calif.

A graduate of Ottumwa High School, he served in the Navy for over 20 years, retiring as a Welder First Class. He was a member of Am Vets, Fleet Reserves and the American Legion in Miami, Fla.

Surviving is his wife, Mary, three daughters, Debbie (Randy) Piere of Cedar Rapids, Lisa (Ron) Neubauer of Miami, Fla., and Jackie (Paul) Elliott of North Carolina; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a brother, Doug Smith of Cleveland, Ohio; two sisters, Shirley Hare and Bonnie Parsons, both of Ottumwa. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Harold Baker officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation will begin after 11 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be made to O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion.
