Mary Gowdy, 101, Ottumwa

OTTUMWA— Mary Gowdy, 101, formerly of 709 W. Fourth, died at 4:30 p.m. July 22, 2006 at the Good Samaritan Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born March 21, 1905 in Leadwood, Missouri to Michael and Mary Schataan Toltin, Sr. She married Thomas W. Gowdy December 1, 1927 in Lancaster, Missouri. He preceded her in death April 20, 1968. She spent the early years of her childhood growing up in the coal mining camps until the family purchased a farm west of Lovilia where she lived until she married Thomas Gowdy. They moved to Ottumwa where she spent the rest of her life as a homemaker, mother and grandmother. Surviving is her son, Michael (Linda) Gowdy of Ottumwa; two granddaughters, Susy (Michael) Riechmann of Traer and Tammy Gowdy-Enloe of Ottumwa; a grandson, Thomas Gowdy of Glenwood; one great-grandson, Scott Enloe of Ottumwa; one step granddaughter, Valerie (Kenny) Lanman of Eldon; one step great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Denniston of Eldon; nieces, Janice (Jerry) Friedmeyer of Grimes, Barb (Wayne) Cotter of Ankeny, Nancy (Reed) Blobaum of Des Moines and Roberta (Terry) Lawerence of Canal Fulton, Ohio, Georgia (Dwight) Pruett and Amber Strieby both of Woodridge, Illinois, Dee Goudy of Ottumwa and Pat Clauson (formerly of Ottumwa) of Texas; nephews, Dr. Tory Toltin of Boston, Massachusetts, John Palm of Lake Zurich, Illinois, Fred Palm of Florida , Joe Chance of Overland Park, Kansas and other extended family members. She was preceded in death by parents, husband, 6 brothers, Mike, George, John, Andy, Steve and Joe Toltin; 3 sisters, Anna “Tootsie” Palm, Rosie Barnes and LaVern Gray. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Reece Funeral Home with Pastors Rick Vesely and Duane Marburger officiating. Burial will be Woodlawn Cemetery in Lovilia. Active pallbearers will be Michael Riechmann, Charles Inman, Dave Huffman, Mark Friedmeyer, Steven and David Blobaum. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Cotter, Reed Blobaum, Joe Chance, Scott and Jerry Friedmeyer, Thomas Gowdy and Terry Lawrence. Visitation will begin after 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the family present from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday. A memorial has been established to Hospice, Inc. 312 E. Alta Vista Ottumwa, IA 52501.
