IOWA CHECKER CHAMPION
~
H. S. Wood of Oskaloosa,
Indigent Over Reports – Will
Defend Title
~
Oskaloosa, Jan. 16 – H. S. Wood of this city, who for two years has carried off the honors in the state checker tournament, is no new hand at the game, and has been winning prizes for the past twenty years. Mr. Wood conducts a machine shop in this city, and is an expert at his trade, having all the business he can attend to. The only hobbies outside of his business are his family and the checker board.

He came to Oskaloosa about ten years ago from Moline, Illinois, and has made the distinction of having won four contests and trying for honors in the fifth. He enjoys the game, and finds in Oskaloosa a sharp competitor in Walter Prine, who was one of the high men at Webster City tournament. Wood is indigent over a report sent from Webster City that there was any friction over the decision of the judges, and has characterized the accusation of the Webster City correspondent as false. Mr. Wood has issued a “defi” to Mr. Merrill, and is willing to meet him in contest eat their favorite game at any time and place that gentlemen can name.
