Ottumwa, Iowa, April, 1st – Word came to this city last night of a fatal accident at Smokey Hollow Mine yesterday. Ed Johnson, who lived at Frederick, and had worked for two years at the Smokey Hollow Mines, which are between Frederick and Avery, was engaged in pouring powder from one cane into another, and at the same time was smoking a pipe. A spark from his pipe dropped into the powder, ignited it, and a terrific explosion occurred, which inflicted such injuries on the unfortunate man that he died in a few hours. Deceased leaves a wife and one child.
