The Sister of Humality of Mary came to Ottumwa in August of 1877 at the request of Rev. John Kreckel. They devoted their time to teaching, caring for the sick and providing for the homeless orphans. They purchased their beautiful in Ottumwa on Court Street the same year as their arrival in Ottumwa. In this they were liberally assisted by MRS. MARY TALLY, a benevolent lady, who afterward made her home with them until her death. This home is at present The Mother House of Sisters Of Iowa.
In 1880, they built a hospital at the cost of about $40,000.000, and for a short time cared for the insane of the County until the County Poor House was completed. The hospital was temporarily closed. They had cared for over 40 orphans, until they could be secure in respectable homes. The Sisters also had a home in Marshalltown, Iowa and Ft. Madison.
