Lawrence GUGGERTY: This gentleman is one of the most extensive land owners in Wapello County, Iowa.
He is now practically retired from business activities, with the exception of stock-raising, in which he still engages. He was born in County Meath, Ireland, April 15, 1832, and is the son of Owen and Julia Riley GUGGERTY.
Owen Guggerty, a native of Ireland, died at the age of fourty-seven years. He married Julia RILEY, who was born in Ireland, and died in this country, after reaching the age of eighty-three years. This couple were the parents of seven children; Owen; deceased, Patrick, who lives with the subject of this this Sketch; Bartholomew and Hugh, deceased; Margaret, John who lives in Jacksonville, Illinois and Lawrence; the subject of this sketch.
Lawrence Guggerty came to the United States in 1849, and located in Dubuque, Iowa in 1853.In 1859, he settled on a farm in Cass Twp; Wapello County Iowa. From 1857 until the breaking out of the Civil War he was a railroad contractor. During the war, he brought horses and mules for the government and at the close of the conflict, resumed railroad contracting, which continued until 1885.
In 1863, he settled on the farm in Cass Twp, in section 31, township 73, range 14.
He now owns 1,425 acres of land in Wapello County. A man of most practical knowledge and executive undertakings, he has met with success in all his undertakings.He is a well-posted man, and takes a deep interest in the various topics of the day. While Guggerty is not actively engaged in farming, he still gives much time and attention to the raising of stock. He built his first home in Eldon, Iowa.
Mr. Guggerty was united in marriage with Bridget GILLASPY, in 1860. She was born in 1841 and is the daughter of William GILLASPY. Mr. and Mrs. Guggerty have nine children; as follows::
Margaret who was born in 1861 married Joseph MANNING, and is living in Ottumwa; Julia who was born in 1865 married Phillip DUFFY, and lives in Oklahoma; John B. who was born in 1865, and now lives at home; Mary born in 1867, and also lives at home; Patrick born in 1869 and lives in Cass Twp; Bartholomew, born in 1871; William born 1873; Ellen born 1875, and Argus born in 1877.The last four still live with their parents.No public undertking is complete without Mr. Guggerty's assistance; which he always willingly gives. He is very well known and lived in Wapello County, where he has constantly worked for the wellfare of the comminity.
**The Guggerty's are buried in the old Original section 2A of Calvary Cemetery.They attended St. Mary's Catholic Church of Ottumwa.I have baptism records ect for this family. Bartholomew died April 03, 1892. Also I have a HUGHY who died March 26, 1886.There are just 2 Guggerty stones standing. The rest may be buried. This part of the cemetery is terribly neglected and we need help preserving our early forefathers resting places. If you can help, please let me know.
