He came with his parents to America when about nine years old. From New York the family went to Kentucky. In 1841 they came to Lee county Iowa, driving with them a herd of cattle all the way from Kentucky.
April 22, 1849, he was married to Miss Martha Pipe. They located in Keokuk where Mr. Chapman was in the meat business for twenty years. In 1867 they came to Bonaparte and this was his place of residence continuously until their decease. Here also he was in the butcher business, continuing in the same until about 1892.
The father and mother, Samuel and Sarah Chapman, also came to Bonaparte, locating on what is now the Haberman farm. They lived to each attain a ripe old age of more than ninety and were buried on the farm afore mentioned.
To Mr. and Mrs. Chapman thirteen children were born of whom the following are living: Mrs. Kate Nixon of San Jose, Cal; Mrs. Emma Packer, Miss Una L., and F.W. of Bonaparte; Mrs. Mattie Scoville of Mankato, Minn.; Alfred and Thos. P. of St. Louis; Grave J. of Spokane, Wash.; and George P. of Lemmons, S. Dak. Mrs. Anna I. Pipe died in 1904; a daughter, Maggie, died soon after they moved to Bonaparte; and two died in infancy. Alfred and Thos. of St. Louis were the only ones present at the funeral except those who reside in Bonaparte. The others were unable to be present.
He died Thursday, January 8, 1908, having attained the ripe old age of 84 years, 8 months, and 16 days. Funeral services were held the Monday following at the late residence, Rev. Kemp of the M.E. church officiating, with burial in the Bonaparte cemetery.
