David W. Carroll.
David W. Carroll was born in Jackson county, Ohio, Aug. 10, 1848, and died at the home of his father-in-law, Jonathan Cresap, in Selma, Van Buren county, Iowa, where [he] was visiting, April 16, 1909, at 3 o’clock, aged 60 years, 8 months and 6 days. He was married to Miss Lulu Cresap, in Nov. 1886, who with her daughter Nellie, aged about 21 years, are left to mourn this bereavement.
The deceased came to Iowa with his parents in the fall of 1853 and settled on a farm in Salt Creek township, Davis county, where he grew to manhood. After spending some time at the old Troy Academy and at the Iowa Wesleyan at Mt. Pleasant, he engaged in the mercantile business, first at Selma and later at Bloomfield, after which he and his family spent several years at Colorado Springs, Colorado, where his home was at the time of his death. He was the fourth son of a family of eight sons and five daughters, nine of whom remain to mourn this sudden bereavement. They are: Rev. Lafe C. Carroll, Mrs. Elizabeth A. Parks, Mrs. Eliza J. Roush and Mrs. Clara A. Black, of Bloomfield; Sanford B., John M. Carroll and Mrs. Mary C. Swaim, of White Elm; Anthony B. Carroll, of Chicago, and B. F. Carroll, governor of Iowa. The deceased united with the Methodist Episcopal church when a youth, under the ministry of Rev. W. G. Thorn, now of Keosauqua. He was always an active republican in politics. His chief trait in life showed the sturdy manhood of his Scotch-Irish and German ancestors.
