A SAD DEATH

Daisy Gertrude Cantril was born at Cantril, Iowa, September 26, 1880, and died of quick consumption at Bonaparte, Iowa, Feb. 14, 1896, having attained the age of 15 years, 4 months, and 18 days. She was next to the youngest of twelve children, one sister and two brothers preceding her to the spirit land.

The funeral services occurred at Cantril, Iowa, Feb. 17, 1896, conducted by Rev. Weese, of Bentonsport, and the remains were tenderly laid to rest by the side of a sister buried there.

A beautiful tribute of respect was shown to their departed mate by the school children of the grammar department of the Bonaparte schools, in which Daisy had been a pupil. They procured the choicest of flowers, and carrying them to her home, impressively laid them upon the casket as they took a sad farewell view of the features of their little friend. It was indeed a pretty and appropriate act. At Cantril, too, many beautiful floral offerings were made by the many young friends of the deceased.

This is the brief history of her earthly heritage. How passing sad it is to note with what timidity she ventured out upon the flinty highways of life, and but a short distance thereon had she proceeded when she

"By the roadside fell and perished,
Weary with the march of life."

And yet a summary of each human existence may be rendered in the three words, birth, life and death; and "he who lingers longest here knows most of care." Indeed, to the aged man or woman whose weary feet are exhausted, the grim destroyer comes soothingly to beckon them to their last reward; but when he enters the abode of the young, the buoyant, the hopeful, and takes them from out the circle of their admiring friends, the pangs are most keenly felt and the blow falls heavily.
