Leslie E. Kirby

Leslie Edward Kirby, 76, of rural Memphis, Missouri died Thursday, May 7, 1992 at 7 p.m. in the Scotland County Memorial Hospital at Memphis, Mo.

He was born October 21, 1915 at Woodford County, El Paso, Ill., to Frances Anthony and Lucy Agnes Lasher Kirby.

After graduation from high school he was inducted into the U.S. Army during World War II, serving as a warehouse foreman in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He received the Bronze Battle Star and Good Conduct Medal.

On December 27, 1941 he was united in marriage to Lena Anna Janssen in the Old Cathedral at St. Louis, Mo. To this union one son and two daughters were born. After discharge from the Army in 1945 Leslie started farming. The family moved to their present farm in rural Scotland County in 1953. He was a member of the St. John's Church and the Memphis V.F.W. Post #4958.

Survivors include his wife, Lena; one son, Daniel Jay and wife, Jeannette of Cantril, Iowa; 2 daughters, Lucinda and husband, Gary Aldridge and Melinda and husband, Randy Emel of Memphis, Mo., 8 grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Delores Kearney of Chenoa, Ill.; Lorene Portcheller of Peoria, Ill., and Rita Hoag of Washington, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Darrell and Raymond.

Mass of Christian burial was held Sunday, May 10, 1992 at St. John's Church in Memphis with Fr. Larry Mullen officiating. Full military honors were at the graveside, conducted by the Memphis Cemetery.

An expression of sympathy may be made to the Scotland County Nursing Home, Scotland County Memorial Hospital or the St. John's Church in Memphis.

Memphis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
