Irving Hickman

Irving J. Hickman, 88, of Ottumwa died at 7:30 p.m. March 5, 1992, of heart disease at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. He was born Sept. 18, 1903, in Des Moines to James Bradley and Lucy Ann Qualls Hickman. He married Mae Louise Triplett on May 27, 1930, in Hannibal Mo. She died in 1954.

He was graduate of Missouri rural schools. He earned a B.S. degree in education from Northeast Missouri University and a M.A. degree in school administration from University of Missouri in Columbia. He was a graduate student at University of Iowa and Iowa State University. He taught for 21 years in Missouri rural schools and served as high schools for 10 years in Iowa and 18 years in Iowa and 18 years as county superintendent of schools in Wapello County. He was county superintendent for Van Buren County Schools in Keosauqua for two years. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and served as adult Sunday school teacher. He was a 50-year member of Ottumwa Lodge 16 and Clinton Chapter 9. He was a member of Past High Priests Clinton Chapter 9 of Royal Arch Masons and Past Watchman of Shepherds of Wapello White Shrine 4. He also had been a member of Ottumwa Council 31, Malta Commandery, 31, Phi Delta Kappa Kappa Delta Pi., Iowa State Education Association and Retired Teachers Association in Ottumwa.

He is survived by s son, James Edgar Hickman of Des Moines; two brothers, James L., of Williamsburg, Mo., and Zacarah of San Francisco, Calif.; a grandchild; and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl and Edward.

The service was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 9, 1992 at Wesley United Methodist Church, the Rev. Richard Quinlan officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Palmyra, Mo.

Memorials may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church.

Robertson-Jay Funeral Home in Ottumwa was in charge of arrangements.
