Vernon Groves

Vernon W. Groves, 74, of 409 Spruce, Montrose, died at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

He was born Dec. 21, 1911, the son of Franklin and Alice Groves of Hamilton. He married Dorothy L. Wallett on July 25, 1931, in Warsaw, and she preceded him in death in June 1967. He then married Dorothy L. Spiker on July 14, 1968, in Argyle.

He was a lifelong resident of the Hamilton, Argyle and Montrose areas. He was an automotive mechanic and was employed by the Mobile Service Station in Montrose. He served in the Army during World War II, and was a member of the Montrose Volunteer Fire Department, DAV, and the Church of the Nazarene in Montrose.

Survivors include his wife of Montrose; sons Frank Groves of San Pedro, Calif., Richard Groves of Montrose and Joe Groves of Linneus, Mo.; daughters Dorothy Coovert of Grandview, Mo., Mary Ann Wrieden of Donnellson, Ida Parrish of Williamstown, Mo., Helen Egle of (Moulton), Iowa and Maxine Rossiter of Keokuk; step-sons Elmer Spiker of Douds, Iowa and Michael Spiker of Montrose; step-daughters Marie Groves of Linneus, Mo., Georgia Ann Varner of Camanche, Iowa and Donna Linginbuhl of Seattle, Wash.; 47 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sons Oron and William Grover(err); step-son David Spiker; step-daughter Mary Ellen Dawson; two brothers and two sisters.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at DeJong's Funeral Home with the Rev. C. Lee Gamblin officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton with military rites.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday with the family meeting friends from 7-9 p.m.
