DANIEL GRAVES LAID TO REST

YORK, Neb., July 31.--The funeral of Daniel Graves, York county pioneer, who died in Lincoln Saturday, was held this afternoon. The body lay in state from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and the funeral was held at 2:30 from the old farm home at Arborville. A friend pays the following tribute to Mr. Graves:

Daniel Graves was a man; simple, quiet, unostentatious, but his genuine kindness of heart and sterling character could be seen in his face and it showed in all his life. He was born at Wells, Rutland county, among the Vermont hills, June 22, 1844, but his youth and young manhood were spent on a farm near Marengo, Ill., where he made a home for his parents and cared for them in their declining years.

At the age of twenty-eight he was married to Martha H. Loomer of Marengo, Ill.

The larger opportunities of the western country appealed to his spirit of enterprise and in 1876 he bought land and made a new home in York county, Nebraska, near the village of Arborville, where he lived for thirty-two years, moving to York in 1909. He also owned a home in Florida, where he spent eleven winters. Habits of industry and frugality combined with good business judgment bore their fruit in a material prosperity to an unusual degree. His word was always as good as his bond and was worth one hundred cents to the dollar.

He took an active part in the religious life of his community; was one of the incorporators of the First Congregational church of Arborville, where he taught a Sunday school class for many years. Later in life he and his wife were confirmed by his brother, Bishop Graves, and they were united with the Episcopal church. His wife and five children survive him: Mrs. Myra Koon of York, Mrs. Nora Clark of Lincoln, Daniel Graves, jr., of Bradshaw, Mrs. M. H. Kelhier of Bradshaw, and Henry C. Graves of York; also Mrs. F. H. Baldwin of York, an adopted daughter. There are ten living grandchildren.
