BESSIE M. HANSHAW

Bessie M. Hanshaw, daughter of Del and Ruth Hewitt Smith, was born January 24, 1904, near Douds and departed this life Saturday, December 18, 1982, at Saint Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa, at the age of 78.

She graduated from Douds High School with the class of 1922 and on May 21, of the same year was united in marriage to Forrest Hanshaw at the Leando Methodist parsonage. They lived their married life on their farm west of town.

Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Donna Ruble and her husband Jack of Ottumwa; son-in-law Alva Davis of Strawberry, Arizona; four grandchildren, Dennis Ruble, Jan Thompson, Lyn Williams and Pam Handlon; and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Roscoe Smith, Buckeye, Arizona and Herbert Smith, Cincinnati, Ohio; a sister, Florence Coder, Wilton, Iowa. A daughter, LaVon Davis and a sister, Elsie Coder, preceded her in death.

Bessie was a life-long member of Christ United Methodist Church, an active member of the United Methodist Women, and Douds Temple No. 104, Pythian Sisters.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 21, at Christ United Methodist Church in Douds with Dr. Chris Daniel, pastor officiating. Interment was in Leando Cemetery. A memorial was established for her church.
