ARTHU T. DOROTHY

Arthur T. Dorothy, son of Robert M. and Anna Sturgis Dorothy, was born November 23, 1899, Stockport and departed this life Thursday, February 19, 1981, at Van Buren County Memorial Hospital in Keosauqua at the age of 81.

He became a district court reporter in 1926 and served with Judges William Walker, Elmer K. Dougherty, and Arthur McGiberin. He retired from District Court service in 1965. He then became a reporter for the Ottumwa Municipal Court and continued in that capacity until 1974.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War I.

Mr. Dorothy attended First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Ottumwa, was a fifty year Mason in Ottumwa lodge No. 16, and a former chaplain of Beer-Barker Post, American Legion in Keosauqua.

On May 26, 1923 he married Martha Jackson who died in 1942. He was married to Esther Coffman who preceded him in death in 1976.

Remaining to cherish his memory area son, James A. Dorothy, Van Buren County Attorney of Keosauqua, a daughter, Catherine Abrahams of Mountain View, California, three grandchildren, James A. Jr., Catherine S., and Andrew G. Dorothy, all of Keosauqua, a sister, Bertha Barker of Douds, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 23, 1981 at 11 a.m. in the Jay Funeral Home in Ottumwa, with Leonard Weaver Christian Science Reader in charge. Nancy Stevens was the organist. Pallbearers were hon. Arthur McGiverin, Hon. Philip Collett, Hon. Dick Schlegel, W.T. Barnes, Esq., Mr. C.K. Wise and Mr. Jack W. Dorothy. Interment was in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Ottumwa. A memorial was established for Van Buren County Hospital, Keosauqua. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua.
