HARLEY A. PENDER

Harley A. Pender, son of R. Lewis and Carrie Barker Pender, was born May 19, 1895, in Van Buren County and departed this life Wednesday, April 1, 1981, at New London Care Center in New London, at the age of 85.

On December 24, 1916, he married Blanche Wilson. She died in May 1942. His parents, 3 brothers, 2 sisters, & 2 stepsons, Marvin and John Burkhalter also preceded him in death.

In June 1943, he married Emma Burkhalter, who remains to cherish his memory. Also surviving are a daughter, Esther Vinyard and her husband Evert of Burlington, a son Oscar of Bonaparte, two grandsons, Earl Vinyard of El Paso, Texas, and Ed Vinyard of Wapello, Iowa, and their wives, two great granddaughters, Tanya and Wendi Vinyard, other relatives and many friends.

Harley united with the Methodist Church at an early age and was a fifty-four year Mason in Bonaparte Lodge No. 73.

He was a retired feed salesman, and lived his life in the Bonaparte, Utica, and Birmingham communities.

He will be remembered as a devoted husband and father, and a good neighbor and friend.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 4, 1981, at 11 a.m. in the Bonaparte Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Harold Harryman officiating. Members of Bonaparte Lodge No. 73. A.F. & A.M. served as pallbearers and provided Masonic rites at the burial in Bonaparte Cemetery. A memorial was established for the cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua.
