Mattie Tisdale

Mattie (Vorhis) Tisdale was born Dec. 2, 1882, on a farm west of Bloomfield. She was the daughter of Glocester and Minerva (Swinney) Vorhis. She died Thursday, January 20, 1972, at the Scotland County Nursing Home of Memphis, Mo. at the age of 89 years, one month, and 18 days.

Mattie attended the rural schools of Davis County, the Southern Iowa Normal at Bloomfield and Cedar Falls. She also taught in rural county schools as well as at Tracy, Elliott and Pulaski.

She joined the Methodist Episcopal Church of Bloomfield in 1901 at the age of 19. At the time of her death she was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Milton.

Mattie and Schuyler Tisdale were married on Oct. 3, 1916. To this union were born one daughter and one son.

Those who preceded her in death were her parents, one brother and three sisters and her husband.

Those who survive are one sister, Mrs. Lola Slagle of Phoenix, Ariz.; one daughter, Mrs. Muriel Birchmier of Pulaski; one son, Fred Tisdale and his wife, Dorothy, of Milton; eight grandchildren, Doran, Donna, Darla and Kurt Tisdale; Mrs. James Stewart, Joyce, Rex, Wayne Birchmier and his wife Sherry; as well as two great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 23, at 2 p.m. in Grace United Methodist Church, Milton with Rev. Dale Church officiating under the direction of the Wellborn Interment was in the Bloomfield IOOF Cemetery.
