GLASGOW, PFC. Ralph Norman: Died 1951

PFC. RALPH NORMAN GLASGOW

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Foley R. Glasgow was born June 5, 1932, at Keokuk, Iowa. In 1935 the family moved to Van Buren County, Iowa where Ralph spent his boyhood. He attended grade school at Selma and Milton and was graduated from the Milton High School with the class of 1950.

Ralph entered the Army March 14, 1951 and received his initial processing at Fort Riley, Kansas. From there he was transferred to the Hawaiian 20th Infantry Training Battalion at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. He was a member of the first group of trainees ever to receive their basic training overseas Upon completing his 14 weeks of basic training, he was sent to the Far East Command. He landed in Japan and spent a few days at Fort Drake and was sent from there to the fighting front in Korea arriving about the middle of August. While in Korea he served with Company C, 15th Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division. Ralph met his death on September 22, 1951 near Tosudong-Ni, Korea. He was a member of a rifle platoon and during an advance he was hit by fragments of an exploding hand grenade, killing him instantly. Temporary burial was made in the United Nations Military Cemetery near Tonggoh, Korea then the remains were evacuated to Japan and returned to the United States arriving on the Loma Victory on December 15. He was awarded the Purple Heart Posthumously for wounds received resulting in his death.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his parents, two brothers, Clifford and Tom, two sisters, Vera and Carol, one grandparent, George Glasgow of Fairfield and one niece. Services will be conducted by the Brown Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 2, 1952 at 1 p.m. at the Methodist Church, Milton, Iowa, the Rev. Harold Harryman officiating. Burial will be made at the National Cemetery at Keokuk, Iowa. Military honors by the Russell-Strait American Legion Post No. 483.
